Today we explored Carlsbad Caverns, New Mexico. The pictures posted here in no way do it justice as they can't capture their size and grandeur. I am still in awe of the place hours after surfacing 750 feet from the depths which are an utterly magical, moving place - a descending cascade of grand chambers decorated with a diverse and stunning array of formations, stalactites and columns, bottomless pits and massive arching ceilings. It was like walking through the Great Artist's secret underground studio, witnessing all sorts of majestic experiments in beauty and original creativity. I have been in my share of caves, but I have never seen a place like this. We were underground almost three hours and emerged deeply impressed, happy and rather spent, not just from the hike but from the sensual stimulation.
Tonight we've returned to our camp in the foothills of the Guadelupe mountains. The wind picked up last night and though I slept right through it, it woke Carr up frequently. Apparently she almost got dragged off in a tent by strong winds in Gabon one time. Tonight it seems colder than last night, and the winds feel stronger.
